Adults or chicks?

  • weinheimermj by weinheimermj

I marked these as chicks because I didn't see any white head markings. Would there be chicks without adults?

    Hi,

The white head patches are actually signs of a different species called Gentoo. These ones are all nesting Adelies (except the one Gentoo adult lying in the foreground nest). Adelies have dark chicks (with no white feathers).

As for your second question, when the chicks become older they're able to stay outside their nests without parents. At that time they form crèches with only one or a few adults guarding them.

Read THIS THREAD. It could help you to identify chicks..
