Blood?

  • M00dlez by M00dlez

I was wondering if that red stuff on the ground was blood or just red rocks. i've seen this camera angle before but have never noticed the red.

    Hello M00dlez!

It is poo, or faeces, from the penguins. It dries up and then gets washed away by rain or blown away by the wind. If it lands on a penguin it can look like blood or an injury.

When the penguins eat fish or squid their faeces are white (you see a lot of white streaks of dried poop!). But when they eat shrimp-like krill, the krill contain a lot of colouring (carotenes) and it discolours their poo. The same colourant makes their beaks and mouth linings a brighter red.

    Hello,

What a great question. It is actually just a penguin poo 😃 Check out the FAQs for more information. You'll see a lot of it on Penguin Watch 😄

    Cheers,
    Z.
