Photo lightening

Is there a way to lighten photos online to gain a more accurate count in darker photos like this one?

If you're using Chrome, there's an extension called Sheen where you can mess with the brightness/contrast (as well as other settings).

Hi nbrandt06 😃 Thanks jenfurr! I hadn't realised that there was such a thing so I'm very grateful to you for mentioning it. The only way I've dealt with it so far is simply to return up the brightness on the screen controls, and cover the really bright area with my hand so I can see more clearly.

I don't think we should worry too much though because of the several people who mark it they will also get their best marks in that central area. With the specialist mapping system that picks up the marks it will still be able to match the area marked with the same area at other times of the day. It's not just a case of the total number of penguins seen, but also of where they are on the screen 😃

(Just want to mention that many users have experienced problems with running Zooniverse projects due to using browser extensions. So I would avoid that if possible. It is useful enough to work with them as they are, using the FAQs hints.)

I tend to enable it when I need it, then disable it. I have a verrrrrrrry old computer running Windows XP and the less memory that's being used, the better. I haven't run across an issue with it (yet).

Thanks jenfurr - it's good to know that you are clear of problems even with an older machine, and I think quite a few zooniversers are on older machines 😉
