Penguin Watch Talk

Chicks v Adults

  • KristaFB by KristaFB

I've classified the ones in the front with gray, rather than black, plumage as chicks. Are these penguins ones that you would wish to have classified as chicks, even though they are no longer tiny? Some tiny images further in the back classified as adults where I cannot discern gray v. black. Is this defaulting to adult desirable to you?

    Hello @KristaFB

That was a good decision. All the lying ones in the foreground are chicks, and the unclear ones should be marked as adults. All of that is answered in our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). Have you read them? It is very helpful.

As told in the FAQs, we consider them as chicks as long as they are missing the mature features. In this case (Gentoo penguins), it would be: Clear full-size white patch on the head, black chin/throat, full-length tail feathers, black back plumage instead of dark grey. Check out the FAQs for more detailed information, and for the mature features for other penguin species.

Thanks for your help. Hope you're enjoying the project 😃
