Early moult?

I saw this image with an apparent early mounting penguin and got to thinking: How common is it to see penguins moulting so very early in the breeding season? Might there be advantages and disadvantages in moulting outside the usual time at the end of the nesting season?

I think it's just a light but well spread layer of poop.... here it is again.. http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ0007smq and you can just see that its left side looks to be 'ok'. What do you reckon?

It's the overwhelming volume of it that bends my mind!

I just spotted something REALLY sad about this picture. That penguin standing just right of centre with its wings outspread, is on an old nest site. She/he lost one of its chicks on the 4th of January. Now both are gone and all the pebbles stolen. Here's the passing of chick number one - it was much smaller than its sibling: http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080tr If you look at the penguin at the bottom front, partway up its right flipper you can just see what looks like a bit of snow in a crevice - that's chick number one. Let's hope they have better luck next year.
