Collection of images showing Gentoo chick hatching.

This is really amazing and I though it might be of interest. 😃
CPZS000167 is a collection of the best images from Nest#2. Below are the images I've gathered for hatchings in the three nests nearest to the camera. Data is also in a spreadsheet, so we can sort as needed.

What a fantastic find! The last pic: http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00089do shows a small hole in the shell of the penguin on the right bottom corner too.
Can I just say craftymonster, that this is an especially awesome collection given what a nightmare it is to track through this series. I'm heartbroken to say that neither of the chicks born in that nest survived. Here's my sequence for the smaller chick dying, and another picture that cropped up showing the nest robbed out and abandoned by just the 13th of January. This is the first time we've had pics taken so often. I hope these pengs have better luck next year :
4th January:
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080zr 2.04pm big chick up, smaller under parenthttp://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080tm 2.15pm looks ok and tucked under mum but smaller than other one?
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080tn 2.30pm looks ok and tucked under mum but certainly smaller than other one
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080za 2.55pm both chicks up ? feeding, but smaller one less engaged
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080sy 2.57pm looks OK and tucked under mum but smaller than other one?
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080uq 3.29pm a huge disturbance of the parent
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080zw 3.37pm the big chick is up and looks alert
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080vq 4.01pm still unhappy, what's going on??
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080vo 5.07pm looks poorly but still trying to sit up
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080sv 5.48pm can't see it
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080yj 5.49pm both chicks tucked under I think
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080vd 5.51pm can see both but small chick under other chick but head up-ish
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080wa 5.52pm both chicks sitting up but little one very runtish
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080vc 5.54pm under parent but small
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080yf 5.56pm squeezed out of parents pouch, parent looking at it
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080vn 5.57pm parent checking it - looks dead?
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080sk 5.59pm looking very poorly under the obvious peng
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080xk 6.01pm rolled into other peng who is beaking it
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080tj 6.02pm rolled out of nest to right onto next pengs tail
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080tw 6.05pm rolled out of nest to right
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080zu 6.11pm is she shouting to defend the dead chick?
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080ue 6.38pm down in front
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080sz 6.52pm down in front
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080tp 6.59pm two pengs regard the little body
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080vx 7.05pm two pengs and parent regard the little body
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080tx 7.03pm down in front like 7.19pm
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080si 7.22pm down front
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080tf 7.37pm two other pengs look at the body, mum looks protective
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080r5 7.47pm is that other penguin touching the body?
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080sj 8.07pm under pengs feet
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080sf 8.10pm down front
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080sb 8.16pm under a pengs feet
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080pc 8.56pm its head is in the beak of the other parent.
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080ti 8.58pm it's been kicked to one side
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080ty10.08pm no sign of it
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080tz 10.30pm it's under a penguin's feet.
http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00080sd 6.07am next day - stuck in a rock crevice
AND tragically by the 13th of January the nest has been robbed out and there are no chicks 😦

Nature is tough and unforgiving.

I wish it were easier. The system used last time has been changed and I'm just bemused with this set. 😦

Thank you for compiling that list, heartbreaking as it is. A few days ago, I saw your comments on the image where the penguin looks like it's touching the deceased chick. Later, I realized it was the same nest I was watching. Poor penguins. 😦
I added the final image, even though it's of a different nest, and will add further images as I classify them. Hoping for a better outcome for that family.

"I wish it was easier to track the photos."
Oh, I do too. Wouldn't it be grand if we could watch a time-lapse of each site? I'd settle for being able to navigate back/forward in time through the images. A bit outside the scope of the project, but it would be so interesting!

Well we did have a very short timelapse a long time ago which showed how the pengs rotate the direction they sit in. But it was a 'once every two hours' sequence. This site is taken about every 3 minutes (or more frequently?) and that'd be really good. If we keep adding to this list we should be able to string a little 'video' together ourselves - yeh! It'll take a few weeks to do, I'll start a string on a 'notepad' and perhaps a techno-whizz could make it a movie? If you spot any more. add them into this string and I'll collect them up. 😃

If you email me list of images in the correct order I'm able to make animated gif from them. I've got only a little time for such things now 😕

by AvastMH moderator
that's a kind offer 😄 I don't think we'll have a decent string for at least two weeks though. I need to pad out the end of the 4th Jan to the 6th January to find out what happened to chick number two. Any chance it would be easier for you then yshish, please?

Yesterday, I went looking for more images of chick #1. I needed know what happened to the poor thing. It died the morning of 6th January, about 36 hours after the smaller chick (#2). I tracked the parent(s) by matching dirt spots and white/poo patterns on flippers.

Many thanks to all of you for Penguin Watch! I hope we can get a more complete set of images over the next few weeks. If you need help getting together the animation, I have the know-how and more than enough free time.

That's so terribly sad, life is too harsh. What is the usual cause of such early fatalities; climate change (overheating, rain causing hypothermia), disease, malnourishment, starvation? In the nest I followed, I don't see any images of the chicks feeding for several days before their deaths. Chicks in surrounding nests were seen feeding often.

I've got a fair bit of time spare, and knowledge to make gifs at least, if you want help with this project. I'll definitely be tracking all the photos I come across from the period the chicks were alive though!

Oh, you're very welcome to help anyhow .) I like doing such things but my work is pretty time consuming when the end of the semester is approaching.. so if you like making gifs, feel free to get involved. If you're busy, not a problem, I'll do it during a weekend:)

Okay, I'll see how we go once some more images have been collected. I know a bit of coding, so maybe I could try putting something together that lets you scroll through them...

I've been collecting a few images of the site, and now I'm starting to wonder how much we actually want to collect. Avast thought there were photos every 3 minutes, but I've found a few just one minute apart!
Here's an amusing spot the difference I found though, check just to the right of the penguin we're watching!

Hi banthesun - I did wonder about the timing...it did seem very very frequent. Might be another site that's working on 3 minutes. 😃
Love the two pics just a minute apart 😄

From what I've seen, the images at this site are 1 minute apart. I'm collecting images of hatchings in three nests in a spreadsheet, and will continue to update the first post in this thread. 😃
What time frame are you interested in collecting? The days the eggs hatched, the days surrounding the deaths, or something else?

I've been collecting ones I come across between December 20th and January 6th, though that might be a bit much.
Perhaps we should make a google doc or something so we can compile them and work on the same list?

Agree with the Google doc. Feel free to create one and share the link 😃
I haven't had a time to classify any penguins from the new data set yet. So sorry for not being very helpful in this. I will dive in again in a month as the semester is over!

Alright, made a doc, so far it contains all my finds, and all the nest 1 and 3 pictures from the first post. I'll add nest 2 when I get time, but feel free to add to it (or change the formatting, if it annoys you) how you see fit!

I'm confused and want to make sure we aren't duplicating our work. I've been updating a spreadsheet with data for the past two weeks (and waiting until you have time for it over summer break). Yesterday you asked Banthesun to create a Google doc. It sounds like you would prefer Banthesun collates data and creates the animation.
Please let us know if this is the case, so we both aren't doing the same work. 😃

Many of the photo numbers start with
APZ0008d??CAN YOU SEARCH WITH SOME SORT OF WILD CARD WHERE I PUT IN "??" TO GET ALL THE SHOTS FROM THAT CAMERA?
I missed the eggs and chicks completely, but here are some I favorited, in time order.

I didn't realise you'd collected more than the stuff on the front page, and made the google docs so we could all contribute to that without duplicating anything (you should be able to edit it from the link I posted).
If your collection exceeds that one though, perhaps you could replace the data with your own, and I'll add in the ones I found later? Or if you want to work on it yourself, I'm fine with that, I was just seeing if I could help. : )

I'm sorry guys for all the confusion! I'm happy with any option mentioned here:)
The Google docs are great for making the list - anyone can get involved without duplicating the work. Then, when the list is completed we can talk about the rest. But feel free to do the animation if you're skilled enough and want to do so. Just let us all know you've started working on it so no one else has started doing the same by himself.
Hope it is clearer now 😃
(In case no one wants to do so, I will do it myself when I have more time, like in July.)

No worries, this is a bit disorganized. It's my fault for not sorting things earlier; I didn't want to bother yshish with questions until term ended and she had more time.
Your help is very welcome. This isn't my project, I'm happy with whatever the moderators/scientists want to do (or not do). I only wanted clarification to ensure neither of us was doing unnecessary or duplicate work.
My spreadsheet is sortable by date, time, nest#, chick#, image#, url, etc. If that data is unnecessary or unwanted I don't want to spend time maintaining it. Your doc is streamlined, which may be all that is required. Hence my previous post.
Part of my job was managing clinical trial data sets (several million immunofluorescent images and patient reports); similar to PW, I imagine. As GES suggested, we should create a protocol so everyone can help. 😃

Please, don't apologize, end of term is arduous. If you have time, would you take a look at my reply to Banthesun? We could use a little direction. Should I abandon the spreadsheet or do you see a need for those data in future?
As for the animation, I only offered because you seemed overwhelmed when AvastMH asked about it. One of my degrees is scientific illustration, animation is second nature. If you have time or Banthesun is eager to do it, lovely. I'm more concerned with efficiently compiling the data. 😃

I don't think it's possible for us to search by wildcard. And, the current image set was processed differently so it's no longer easy to navigate through the images. In the past, I could have found the complete set in no time. But, it's more fun for everyone this way, thanks for helping!
I agree about getting instructions together. I'm not even certain what dates or events are relevant, so that needs sorting as well. Until we get it worked out, you could update your post/collection and add them directly to Banthesun's Google document.

Really neat! We are tracking each nest in the same way that @craftymonster logged the chicks demise. Unfortunately many nests do get deserted or the eggs or chicks are not viable. These may be first time breeders so there may be luck for them next season.

I'm a bit shy on taking control of protocols and such, but what I started with was meant to cover the data as efficiently as possible. Putting a gif together, we'd just need the order the photos need to go in, but it might be possible to work with more information if we do something fancier.
There's also the issue of just how many images there are. We might have to trim down our range a bit, so knowing which photos are interesting could be useful for that. If we're adding to the google doc, we could add comments after the links (stuff like "chicks" or "eggs"). Dunno if there's a better way to go about it though.

Maybe a bit salty about missing out on the competition, but I spotted a tourist boat showing up at the site on December 30th, and I've collected a bunch of images featuring it. So you can watch all the tourists wandering around and boating about, and perhaps imagine what it'd be like visiting.
The images are from 1pm to 5:42 in the google doc (currently page 12 to page 14).
Now, I should probably be focusing on the penguins more. Would people preffer if I hunted images from when the chicks were hatching, or from their final days next?

Wow banthesun- you're really good to stick with these. I hope we've all got a wish list to give to the winner?!
I quite liked this one: http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ00085r5 it's the ship going away.
For me I like the chick hatching - it's a bit more upbeat than the demise.
I've got very few pics from the hatch time:

I checked the google list and it just goes to 6th December. Hopefully we will see banthesun soon and can ask about the google list, I'll drop them a p.m.
I'm making a google slide show of the files...which might blow up Google - just giving fair warning 😮 😉

Sorry about the delay, I was a bit busy for a week there, but I'm glad to be back and marking penguins!
I hadn't been collecting pics from beyond the 6th of January, since I think I decided to collect just the ones that recorded the life of the first chick we found hatching. I can keep an eye out for pictures that might show this other poor chick though, and try to figure out which nest it came from, at least.

Oh, feel free to add more pictures either before or after the ones I've collected, by the way! Any new dates we add might end up missing some pics, depending on what's already been counted, but I'm sure we can fill out the difference easily enough!
