Opposite of Pancake Ice?

  • nthrockmorton by nthrockmorton

Is there a name for when the ice begins to break up? We know that pancake ice forms when it begins to come together, and it looks like here in this summer picture that it is breaking up. Or are we wrong on all fronts!

I'm not sure there is a name for that exact point of pancake ice break-up. Lots of sea ice forms described at this link as well as a couple of links therein: Forms of Sea Ice .
