Gentoo vs other?

  • egyptophile by egyptophile

Why are there so many pictures of Gentoo penguins but almost no pictures of the other types?

    Hi,

It is a good question. There are over 100 sites being monitored. Most of them are occupied by Gentoos as you can see in the map of our cameras.

Some of the cameras take pictures less often, like every hour, some more often, like every couple of minutes which gives different numbers of pictures from each site. They come in random for the classification. So sometimes you can get more pictures from a particular site than from the others.

Hopefully we'll finish data from the current data set soon and will get new images from new sites!!

    Thanks for sharing help!!

Let's start with the penguins in this image- they are Adelies. Gentoos (with white headflash) also nest in the area and in later photos you'll see one of the local Gentoo pairs nesting toward the bottom of the image in this series of photos.

Some cameras are set to take photos more frequently than others so naturally we'll see more of those. So far this season we've seen Gentoo, Adelie, King, Macaroni, and Chinstrap penguins. Last season we also saw Rockhoppers, and they will make an appearance this season at some point.
