Parched Penguins

This image is striking for the "usual" mass assemblage of adult and chick Emperor penguins.... but where's the snow?

    Hi @Birdheart

Interesting question! This site is in the South Georgia where the winter starts in August and summer starts in January. The image was taken at the end of January which means it is a summer scenery there:) The temperature at the moment was 15°C which is too much for the snow:)

Actually, these are King penguins, not Emperors. You can tell by the brown chicks for the first sight.

I just wonder how there can possibly be enough food in one place to support this sort of mass of penguins.

Many fish in the sea, I guess!

The diet of the King penguins rely mainly in fish and squid and include a small amount of krill and other crustaceans. Fish constitute 80-100% of the diet, except in winter, when fish is only 30% of the intake. Lantern Fish are the main fish eaten by Penguins. source

    Interesting, isn't it?
