Gentoo and Adelie together?

  • nthrockmorton by nthrockmorton

It looks like there are both Gentoo and Adelie together in this picture. Do they nest together usually? Or, are we mistaking them?

    Hi
You are quite right - this is one of the mixed species colonies with Gentoos and Adelies together.
There is a demarcation line here - the Gentoos on the left and Adelies on the right.

Thank you! We found another image from the same mixed colony and my daughter was very excited!

There is one colony of rockhoppers who have visits from 2 Magellanic penguins. They live nearby and drop in to visit.
One of them is here - I wonder if your daughter can find him http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ0003hhy
A clue - he has a stripe around his face and one across his chest.
Great to know we have children helping us. Happy hunting!

Yes, it is very interesting when the two species nest together like this since they can compete for food resources and nest space. This particular colony is at Petermann Island:

Thanks, @caitlin.black ... ! I hope they get along at least somewhat.

Interesting island there. Something about the phrase "Important Bird Area" really amuses me... maybe it's because it's so blunt, or maybe it's because I picture it as the area for the Important Bird. (He's so important!)

Do you ever land in "Port Circumcision?" Does that ever get some chuckles? 😃
