Frozen Chick?

  • la_nee by la_nee

Is that a frozen chick in the left corner?

Given the date, the parents should have started gathering food since september again and the little ones should form creches. Could that be one, that didn't pass the weather circumstances?

Is there any information what percentage of penguin chicks pass the "bad" weather?
It's probably still a good guard against predators, I suppose.

Hi la_nee. It is not a dead penguin - it is the top of a rock just sticking out of the snow 😃 At this date the penguins are just settling down to nesting, there are no chicks yet. By the time autumn comes the chicks will moult into adulthood. I do not know what percentage of them survive their first year. I will pop a question into the science board to ask for you ('First year survival rate - Gentoos').
I hope this helps - do ask for more information if you wish.
    Happy counting!
