Kings: 2 waves of egg laying per season?

  • Code9 by Code9

In Image APZ0004vs9 it looks like there are two distinct waves of chick births. The first wave look like adults (Kings) but are still molting and a second wave that are still in their early brown chick down. The two waves seem to stay in groups of their peers.
Is that right? That they have two rounds of egg laying per season?

I think the penguins close to the camera are actually just adults moulting, while the brown ones are still chicks. I know it does take a bit over a year for the chicks to fully grow up, but I'd expect more of a size difference if they were both groups of chicks. I believe the chicks stay in groups because they're easier to protect like that (and I like to imagine that they have all their friends there)!
