Penguin Watch Talk

Injuries

Seems a few of these adults have some nasty wounds to their sides or backs. Could this be the result of predators or from climbing up the rocks?

No, nothing to do with either idea, sorry! Explained also in the FAQs, what you and many others are worried about is in fact very messy, stinky penguin poo. See the whitish streaks a bit right of centre? More poo. When nesting as these are, it's important for them to shoot out that guano (poo) away from their nest, no matter who or what is in the way.

If you're a bird nesting in a tree the poo drops down, or the nestlings' fecal sacs are carried away by the adults. Here in the land of the penguins, it shoots out and gets on everything!
