Does does penguins of different species often socialize?

    Hi,

Well spotted. Yes, they do but it depends on the species. Gentoos and Adelies, sometimes even Chinstraps, can be seen nesting close to each other, although their nests are usually kept separated from the other species. We are monitoring some mixed colonies, like this one from Petermann island. There are much more Gentoos, they're just nesting behind the camera.

We have seen some Rockhoppers and Macaronis nesting together as well, and there are even known hybrids between them!

Hope this answers your question 😃

    Cheers,
    Z.

Well they are happy to share an area, but they don't really socialize as such. I suspect there was a bit of a neighbourly falling out just after this picture, because that Adelie looking at the Gentoo is stood right in the Gentoo's nest -oops! Here's the correct owner in situ: https://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ0005bil

That rock area goes off to the left too, so there are more Gentoos over there: https://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ000182y
