Penguin Watch Talk

two different species

  • lesleylupo by lesleylupo

This is the first time I have seen two different species of penguins on the same page. Just shy of 600 pages. How uncommon is this?
    Thanks for your time,
    Lesley

    Hi Lesley,

Well noticed! There are more mixed colonies like this, and not only Gentoos x Adelies but even Chinstraps. And we do have Rockhoppers and Macaronis mixed together with a single pair of Magellanics!! 😃 Not in the active data set though.

Although both species are nesting on the same rock, usually, each of them keeps separated from the other. From time to time, you can see a few individual nests surrounded by nests of another species of penguins there too but it is not common. As for this one, there are many Gentoos nesting just behind the camera. So it isn't a lonely Gentoo nest at all! 😉

    Cheers,
    Z.
