2014 November

So as I'm looking through my November collection, I notice some of these pictures are just says apart. My question is how far apart are all these cameras and does the weather change so drastically in a 24h period to have complete snow cover over the land. Are these cameras spaced very far apart? May be a naive question but not much snow fall in HI to really compare snow patterns from here to there 😛

    Hi Meihran,
I'm VERY sorry that we haven't replied so far! It gets very busy with comments so please do chase us for a reply if you've waited more than 4/5 days!

Wonderful image collecting - great observations!

Yes these areas are a long way apart. Some are right up in the Falkland Islands (we're hoping to get maps of where they are exactly), and some way down on the Antarctic Peninsula so they will have differing temperatures and weather. Now I'm not sure but, I think that http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ0004qb6 and http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/subjects/APZ0004qex are the furthest north, so the warmest areas. Their snow is long gone. The others show snow covered in penguin poop coloured red/brown by eating krill. It transpires that this colouration helps absorb the energy of the sun and melts snow more quickly from the penguin nesting sites.

Here's the thread about maps: http://talk.penguinwatch.org/#/boards/BPZ0000001/discussions/DPZ0000e49?page=2&comment_id=556bdefa5135d07498003ad9
