This is Egg Rock in 2016. It is a smaller group of penguins nesting this season.

Ah, ok. But does that mean that they dont always breed at the same place, or what other reason might there be so much less penguins?

You are correct. Gentoo penguins prefer to move every year. They may just move to a nest a few feet away, or they may travel for miles.

This group has at least one we saw here in the 2014 nesting season. You remember the male with a very broad headflash?

He watched others nesting in 2014, then nested in one nest in 2015 and in a different nest in 2016.
