#dailyzoo and #Pengfun

Hi everyone!
#dailyzoo: DON'T FORGET TO SUGGEST THINGS 😃
There's lots of great things happening in the Zooniverse at large and PW appears just as much as any other project. Why not round off your PenguinWatch session each day with a quick trip to see what everyone else is up to? Our very own Dr Tom Hart featured in dailyzoo on June 3rd this year. Looks like Careers Advisers need to register a new job on their lists. The title 'Penguinologist' earned this shot a 'BBC Funniest logo' mention 😄
Of course our youngest Penguinologist, Annika, would be able to help the Careers Advisers out with a full description of the job 😉
We usually have pictures of penguins to offer Dailyzoo - might be something like this "Why penguins like pebble-mound nests!" picture
DZM will pick up the #dailyzoo pictures to put them into the Zooniverse pages - and that's how it all works 😃
If you see something very funny then use the hashtag #Pengfun (I tried this out and it doesn't seem to be in use just now) 😃 Don't forget that the accompanying comments from us (at all times) have to be suitable for all ages!
Happy Pebbles everyone! oo0OoO0Ooo0o0OO0o0

Wow!! The Great Man himself - super! Well that's a catch for PW 😄 Very interesting that the Chinstraps shown are a secret group to us now - so hopefully we can expect to see them later in the year? 😃
Hoping a bit here - but I wonder if he's doing a The Sky At Night programme for the BBC from Southern skies? In which case a mention of PW on TSAN would be just wonderful.
Awww - I do miss the Boat Shed Band - they were a lot of fun 😃

hello, I CERTAINLY WOULD LIVE TO GET MORE PHOTOS OF PENGUINS TO COUNT AND THE SITE JUST FEEDS ME 3 OR 4 THEN I HAVE TO WAIT OR RE ENTER SITE. I LIVE IN AMERICA SO I NEED TO CONNECT INTO MORE SITES TO HELP OUT YOUR GREAT ENDEAVOR TO WATCH AND OBSERVE THESE REALLY ATTENTIVE PARENTS . REALLY LOVE LEARNING ABOUT THEM.

Hi inman - I hear your words and understand them very well. And once we finish summer 2014/5 the pictures for summer 2015/6 will be coming on line. We are covering about 20,000 classifications every day which is very impressive 😃 .
Last year we covered a few more sites, but we only got pictures taken about every 1 or 2 hours. This year we have astounding volumes of data from a few sites with pictures, during their summer, coming in every one or two minutes. It does make the project feel a lot more concentrated. Never-the-less, the work that you put in is providing the essential data for Dr Hart's enquiries into changes in penguin numbers. Computers are being taught to do this counting (and your work here also helps that to come about), but they are still not as clever as we are. The data that you are producing is already helping to change, for example, fishery rights in Antarctica to protect the penguins' feeding grounds.
I think that you would find Dr Hart's talk at ZooCon 2015 of interest. https://plus.google.com/events/c3hiu9kfnu7597vbqn5cmchrfkg The visuals are not the highest quality but you should be able to make out the slides he shows. The recording is from 3 hours 5 minutes to about 3 hours 35 minutes on this recording. I found it enlightening and re-watch it now and then when The Rock shows up four times in a row.
Thank you so much for your patience and your efforts. Your part in citizen science is real. These details simply could not be obtained if all that was available was field science, no-one could sit out the Antarctic nights to discover (as we are) what penguins do during the night and winter.
Thank you again inman1 😃

Zooniverse Advent – Day 9: Penguin Watch Jigsaw Puzzle
Have you ever wondered how would it be to complete a jigsaw puzzle made of PW shots? 😃 Well, someone decided to help you answer that question. It was no one else than Shaun Noordin who created such a puzzle from this amazing picture of a plain crowded by King penguins for you. Just click on the link below and you can spend the whole weekend by putting all the tiny pieces together 😉

Fun videos at Chimp&See - surprising, cute, quite a selection, and you can vote for the best!
The Moderators on Chimp&See (and that includes PW's yshish 😄) have put together a few 15 second snippets of the best of Chimp&See Zooniverse for 2016. If you want to see some of the other lovely animals that the Zooniverse 'cares for' then hop over, cast a few votes, and enjoy the wonderful sights of a hot jungle (makes such a change from snow 😉 )

Penguin Watch has been mentioned in a DailyZoo post today, due to a Penguin shaped galaxy found by @Ghost_Sheep_SWR in GalaxyZoo project! So cool.
Now we should find a galaxy on Penguin Watch*, and make it to DailyZoo blog again 😄 😉

*suggestions anyone?

I very much like this charming galactic penguin 😃 We've had so many fantastic light displays in the last set of pictures that I'm sure we must be able to find something to charm the Zoo-Galaxians 😃

Yeah, I believe so! 😄 Please, do let me know when someone suggests an appropriate PW galaxy picture to be dailyzooed, and I'll make sure it will make it there 😄

Hi there Penguinians 😃
Just shortly visiting from outer space, way too cold here!
For galaxy-like penguin images I'd suggest zooming in on a weird penguin eye. Got any good close-ups from those particular penguins?
Good luck! 😃

Well - that's a challenge too Ghost_Sheep_SWR ! As soon as my brain gets over the working week (i.e. tomorrow) the hunt is on! Looks like I need a weird penguin eye and something galaxy-ish. With some of the light displays on our latest set of pictures I hope we stand a chance 😄
Meanwhile make sure you don't get scrambled in the transporter beam with any wild eyed penguins 😉 😉 😄

@AvastMH Hahaha! 😄
Nice to see you here, @Ghost_Sheep_SWR 😃 Good suggestion with the penguin closeups! But don't underestimate our penguins. I'm sure some of them will pretend being a galaxy for you, soon or later 😄

I guess it's an optical artifact, but not the kind i've become immune to in GalaxyZoo 😃 (literally don't see them anymore)
And that penguin near the beam looks terrifying, maybe a zombie penguin virus outbreak?Indeed ive seen some beautiful images mentioned here! Here's an example of what i meant, but might be a little bit too high-res for Penguin Watch images... And yes I cheated a bit but it IS a penguin eye 😉
Hmm best not to stare back, strangely discomforting lol

Hello Ghost_Sheep_SWR 😃 Looks like a yellow-eyed penguin eye and we don't have those on PW so the best I can offer is this picture:
which goes to show, just as you suspected, that we don't get that much detail, just enough to count our feathered friends, eggs, chicks etc 😃
We got some close ups of gentoos, but they all had closed eyes and seemed to be enjoying siestas in the early afternoon.
However we can offer some celestial points of interest:
- Inside a Green Pea Galaxy:
- The mini-moons of Antarctica:
- The Penguins of Planet Four:
I suspect that these will not be featured by Chris Lintott on the next edition of the BBC's Sky at Night! 😉 😄
Wishing you many warm pebbles 😃

Love the idea of Galafray. Perhaps APZ0001r63 is really a disappearing Tardis? Yshish I think your selections are brilliant. 😄 😄 😄

Lol nice images! A black sun might explain why it's so cold there 😉
And the last two images seem to reveal the true origin of so many penguins, a Peng Gate!
Oh and I'm not sure if images tagged #dailyzoo are really seen, so posting in the dailyzoo thread might be the best chance 😃

Whoa! Planet Nine has penguins? We think we've captured a Backyard planet penguin so I posted this one to: https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/marckuchner/backyard-worlds-planet-9/talk/692
We've recently had a chance to show the Zoo-Galaxians some fun pictures of bizarre light effects in Antarctica so here's one for Planet Nine 😃
Penguins have a keen sense of curiosity it seems. With deep snow levels this penguin managed to get close to the camera - just as the flash went off. The result was a somewhat other-worldy 'Planet Nine Penguin' . 😄
Best wishes in your endeavours to find Planet 9! AvastMH (moderator on PW)
