SANCCOB - penguin research

  • WillowSkye by WillowSkye

Good day, wondering why SANCCOB, www.sanccob.co.za, is not part of the organizations on the team?

To quote from their website "SANCCOB is at the forefront of saving African penguins and other threatened seabirds. It never takes a day off and its rehabilitation team is on 24-hour call.
SANCCOB deploys its specialist emergency response skills in Africa, the Indian Ocean region, Antarctica and Sub-Antarctic. Through its training academy it equips people to work in the environmental sector; and a passion to instill pride and knowledge about marine conservation drives its education programmes.

SANCCOB is a leader in seabird disease research.

LATEST AFRICAN PENGUIN FIGURES released by South African Department of Environmental Affairs (2012):

18 683 breeding pairs in the wild in South Africa (excludes Namibian figures)"

One can even adopt a penguin:-)

    Hi WillowSkye,

We're really good friends with SANCCOB and completely support their work. However, we've only just started collaborating on cameras. African penguins are much harder to monitor than the species in our study so far, because they breed in scrapes and burrows, so you tend to need one camera per nest.

At the moment, SANCCOB, Bristol Uni and some of the other African organisations have been trialling some of our cameras to see if they are useful in South Africa. If they work, you can expect to see their images in here for penguins and hopefully other seabirds in penguin watch next year!

    Watch this space.

    Cheers,
    Tom
