Penguin Watch Talk

two ideas of what else might be done with the data

my apologies if these have already been thought of, but as marking it occurred to me that:

    • once the computer recognition/counting is established, perhaps the computer could also try, for the nesting colonies, measuring the area of the penguin, to get a rough idea of how much body mass loss the penguins lose while nesting, as well as the rate. understand this won't be strictly quantitative, but.. don't know if this is already known/been done in the field. also don't know if the pengs are stationary enough to allow this
    • can get some idea of the longitudinal ice coverage, by looking at same cameras over days and years. in some photos there water in the background is completely iced over, others it's in break-up stage, and others is free water
